The printout below shows the design for a plate lug without any side load, but it is the basis for calculating the additional stress that a side load imposes on a plate lug and the weld. Note that this example is very much like the pad eye lug for #25 Presentation, ie, the dimensions are all most. 9.14 Axially Loaded Lug Design. This section presents procedures for the optimized design of lugs, bushings and pin in a symmetrical, double-shear joint, such as shown in Figure 9-5, subjected to a static axial load (P). One design procedure applies to the case where the pin is critical in shear, the other to the case where the pin is critical.

An issue that concerns me, that I'm not certain is addressed by the standards that have been mentioned, is the possibility of lateral-torsional buckling of certain types of lifting lugs. Consider a vessel being lifted and rotated from horizontal to vertical. Typically it will have some lugs (or trunnions) near the top of the vessel, and a tailing lug near the bottom. Some types of lifting lugs are placed near the top head (or at a transition) and project upward for some distance. In the horizontal position this makes the lifting lug act as a cantilever beam. It is conceivable that if the lug's span is long enough and the b/t ratio low enough then it could experience lateral-torsional buckling. I believe that paying attention to this possibility and designing the lug with a low b/t ratio should account for this condition.
Getting the same information in digital format is so much less expensive and more convenient! Maybe you need the manual to fix the brakes on your CLK55 AMG, or possibly replace some worn out suspension components.

Lifting attachments may remain on the vessel after erection unless there is some. Orientation should be established such that a line through the lifting lugs is. The spreadsheet verifies some configurations of lifting lugs and padeyes. And its updating to 2005 AISC Manual of Steel Construction (click here to download it). For instance, a 'relatively thin' lifting lug might have plenty of strength to support the vessel in pure tension (vertical position), and even adequate bending strength in the horizontal position. But if the lugs are too thin then lateral buckling may be a failure mode. RE: Out of plane buckling in lifting lug (Mechanical) 16 Nov 16 19:06.
